Canada’s 2026 IEC Season is Officially Open: How to Apply for Your Work Permit

Updated: Apr 29

Canada’s 2026 IEC Season is Officially Open

As of December 19, 2025, the candidate pools are open, allowing eligible youth from 36 countries to submit their profiles for a chance to live and work in Canada.

The IEC is a program designed for foreign nationals aged 18–30 or 18–35 (depending on citizenship) to obtain a Canadian work permit. These permits are LMIA-exempt, meaning your employer doesn't need to prove they couldn't find a Canadian for the job.

The Three IEC Categories

Depending on your goals and your country’s specific agreement with Canada, you can apply under one of three streams:

  1. Working Holiday: Provides an Open Work Permit, allowing you to work for almost any employer in Canada. This is the most popular and competitive category.

  2. Young Professionals: Provides an Employer-Specific (Closed) Work Permit. You must have a signed job offer in your field (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) that contributes to your professional development.

  3. International Co-op (Internship): Also a Closed Work Permit, designed for students currently enrolled in post-secondary education outside Canada who require a work placement to complete their studies.

Who Can Apply?

You must be a citizen of one of the 36 partner countries (including the UK, Ireland, Australia, France, and South Korea).

Basic Requirements:

  • Age: 18–30 or 35 (varies by country).

  • Funds: At least $2,500 CAD to cover initial expenses.

  • Insurance: Valid private health insurance for the entire duration of your stay.

  • Travel: A round-trip ticket or proof of funds to buy one at the end of your stay.

How the Process Works

The IEC uses a "pool" system rather than a "first-come, first-served" basis.

  • Step 1: Create a Profile. Submit your profile to the IRCC. If you had a profile in 2025 but weren't selected, you must create a new one for 2026.

  • Step 2: Receive an ITA. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) holds regular "rounds of invitations." If you are selected, you’ll receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

  • Step 3: Apply for the Permit. Once you receive an ITA, you have 10 days to accept it and 20 days to submit your full application and pay the fees ($184.75 plus category-specific fees).
